Hoodoo Candle Divination
by Liz Shepherd
Hoodoo, an African Caribbean religious tradition, candles are used to
tell the future and to cast spells. The way that a candle burns tells
the practitioner what the future holds as well as whether their magic
will be successful.
Wax
If the wax of a Hoodoo candle runs down the candle and onto the candle
holder or table, the pattern of the wax can be used to tell the future.
If the melted wax touches something, that can signify how well the spell
will work.
Smoke
The amount of smoke that the candle puts out when burned is also
important in Hoodoo. A candle that emits smoke early in its burn but
that stops smoking means that work can overcome someone's bad intentions
toward you.
Light
Whether or not a candle goes out when it is first lit has meaning. The
exact meaning is determined by why the candle is being burned and
whether it will light again a second or third time. A candle that is
hard to light usually means that the spell is not taking and should be
started again.
Pins
A pin is sometimes inserted into a Hoodoo candle during spell work. The
needle's behavior when the wax burns down to it reveals the outcome of
the spell. If the needle doesn't fall away from the candle, it can mean
that a person or idea is being clung to.
Speed
How quickly the candle burns can determine how well a spell will work
and how long it will take to do so. A quick burn often means a quick
resolution.
